Habits That Can Harm Your Teeth

Since childhood, parents warn their children about plaque and the damage it can cause to teeth. Plaque is basically a soft, sticky mix of bacteria and substance they secrete. If plaque begins to build up in your teeth, it will gradually hardens, thus, creating calculus or tartar that causes gum diseases or gingivitis.
Avoiding plaque build up on your teeth is actually very simple and basic. In fact, you must have been reminded of these things by your parents when you were a kid. As a quick re-call, the following are some of the common dental habits that can cause plaque:
- Not brushing your teeth regularly.
See, plaque is like a bee. One cannot bother you, but many can hurt you. So if you let plaque build up on your teeth, you'll soon have dental problems. Hence, brushing your teeth twice or thrice a day is very important. In fact, you should be brushing your teeth every after meal to avoid plaque formation. If you think you can get away thinking that no one will notice if you don't brush your teeth twice a day, sorry, but your teeth will.
Another habit that can be bad for your teeth is not flossing daily. You see, brushing is not enough, as bristles cannot reach the spaces between your teeth. Unfortunately, plaque does. Hence, you need to floss in order to reach through the hard-to-reach spaces in your teeth. In addition, flossing can also get rid of the plaque at the gum line. If plaque is not cleaned in this area, it may eventually lead to periodontal disease. So make it a habit to floss after you brush your teeth. You can always ask your dentist of what floss to use if you do not know which product to use.
- Not visiting the dentist regularly.
Many people neglect dental visits. Some do so because of their fear with the dentist, while others simply do not have time due to busy schedule. Avoiding your appointments with the dentist can result to more serious dental complications in the future. Brushing and flossing are not enough to keep your teeth plaque fee. Regular dental cleaning and fillings are a must, and these procedures can only be done by a dentist. Hence, regular dental check up is a must to make sure that your pearly whites are in top shape.
Bacteria live in simple carbohydrates such as sugar. So if you love eating a lot of candy or drinking soft drinks and not brushing your teeth afterwards, you are in fact feeding the bacteria in your teeth. Candies and junk foods can contribute to plaque formation. Hence, avoid eating high-sugar foods or drink. If you can't resist your sweet tooth, make sure that you brush your teeth after eating. You can also ask your dentist to put sealant, plastic coatings that cover the tooth surface, on your teeth to keep bacteria from entering. Rinsing with mouth wash can also prevent tooth decay and plaque.
